WP4 Surgical prophylaxis

The planned WP4 study is designed to test the hypothesis that identification of carriers of the multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens called “Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Producing Enterobacteriaceae” (ESBL-PE), followed by targeted adaptation of pre-surgical prophylaxis for ESBL-PE carriers, reduces SSI among carriers with minimal harmful effects.

WP4’s primary aim is to determine whether antibiotic prophylaxis with ertapenem for carriers of ESBL-PE ("screen and treat strategy") before colorectal surgery reduces the incidence of SSIs (caused by all etiological pathogens) at 30 days post-surgery, as compared to a baseline period during which ESBL-carriers will receive standard of care (i.e., cefuroxime/metronidazole prophylaxis).
